Abstract

The slurry after sedimentation process is discharged from water treatment plants to water stream causing environmental problems, in another track, the excess iron and manganese in ground water is not accepted as drinkable water. This study aims to solve both these environmental problems. Slurry was collected from Embaba (WTP) and burned at 850 oC before its use as absorbing agent in the removal of iron and manganese. Synthetic samples containing constant iron and manganese concentrations (Fe = Mn = 1 ppm) were treated with dried slurry. The obtained results demonstrated that, the dried slurry achieved high removal for iron concentrations (99.3%), while the manganese removal showed unassuming results (30 %). Further attempt was done to enhance the removal efficiency of slurry through its mounting by activated carbon (Slurry70AC30) in order to improve the manganese removal which reached to 71 %. Survey and analysis was done for ground water plants in delta region (Monofiya governorate), using water quality index (WQI) as mathematical model to select the worst water quality (Ashmoun district 41.1%). Both dried slurry and slurry70AC30 were applied and an improvement in the water quality index (83.3%) and (86.6%), respectively, was observed.
