Abstract The objective of this study is to establish the role of risk factors in the etiology of pharyngocutaneous fistula formation after total laryngectomy. A prospective study was performed for patient, disease and treatment related factors, and also factors related to pathology specimen. The fistula development incidence was 34%. A significant relationship was found between pharyngocutaneous fistula development and preoperative radiotherapy, chemotherapy, diabetes melliteus and hepatic disease.Most of fistulas healed conservatively and only 11.7% of the patients surgical repair of the fistula was done by the use of pectoralis major myocutaneous flap or deltopectoral flap |
