Abstract

Background: Intravenous therapy instead of oral hydration is common practice in labor that might affects the course of labor and newborn weight. Aim: this study aims to assess the effect of intravenous fluid during parturition on labor progress and, newborn weight loss in Jordanian Governmental Hospitals. Design: Descriptive correlational design was utilized in this study. Sample: A convenience sample of (033) women was selected from labor unit according to certain criteria from December 3300 to July 3302. Setting: the study conducted at the labor room at two Jordanian governmental hospitals (Al bashir hospital, Prince Faisal hospital).Tools: utilizes for data collection using maternal assessment sheets (Partograph), maternal fluid chart per ml and newborn weight sheet was used. Results: the current research study reveals that the age of women ranged from 33 - 23 yrs old with mean of (3.70 ± .7.3).Moreover the result found that the mean duration of active phase among women received 0.33 ml (2733±3744) lesser than women who received only03.3 ml and 0333 ml (.702±37.3,& 07.3±0733 respectively), The newborn weight loss was a significant differences from 0st day till 0th day, with P was (373330, 373330, 373330, 373330, 373330, & 37330, respectively) compared to at birth weight. While the weight restored again at .thday after delivery. Conclusion: a significant relationship exists between the amount of intravenous fluid infused& duration of active phase of labour rather than 3nd& 0rd stage of labour, as well as weight loss in the newborn during first week of postpartum. Recommendations: Conduct care protocol for the IV fluid management during parturition in Jordan hospitals
