Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate whether low level laser irradiation was able to improve some biochemical parameters changes observed in the parotid and submandibular glands of diabetic rats and its effect on structures of those glands also studied. The glycemic state of the rats was also evaluated. Sixty adult female healthy wistar rats weight about 200 - 250 g were used. The rats were divided into four groups equal in numbers; The first group, (control group) represented the healthy untreated rats. The second group (diabetic group) received a single intraperitoneal injection with 50 mg / kg of streptozotocin (STZ). The third and fourth groups (laser groups) also received the same dose of STZ as second group and subjected to low level laser irradiation with 5 and 20 J / cm² (Diode laser 870nm ,100mW). After thirty days from induction of diabetes the laser groups were exposed to the laser irradiation day after day for one week. The blood glucose level were measured before and after laser application. Then the rats were euthanized and the parotid and submandibular glands were removed for histological light and electron microscope) and enzymatic evaluation. Rats in diabetic group showed lipid droplet accumulation in salivary glands but it decreased after laser irradiation. A decrease in fasting glycemic level after laser irradiation was observed. Also, laser irradiation reduced the catalase and glutathione peroxidase activity in parotid and submandibular gland
