Abstract

To compare clinical and radiographic response of the pulp to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and portland cement (PC) as capping materials in pulpotomy of young permanent teeth. Study sample included 60 children (total of 120 first young permanent molars) with age ranging from 6-8 years. A double blinded split-mouth design was used where each patient received both materials, with both MTA and PC being randomly assigned to either the right or left side. The teeth were treated by conventional pulpotomy technique, differing only in the capping material for each side. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were recorded at1, 3, 6 and 12 month follow-up.Clinically, MTA (100% success) and PC (92.7% success) showed no statistically significant difference; however, PC had 18.2% less radiographic success rate than MTA that showed 81.8% radiographic success rate. PC may be considered as a less expensive substitute to MTA based on its clinical success rate. However, future trials with longer follow - up assessments are recommended to further explain the discrepancy between radiographic and clinical success rates
