Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to find the clinical correlation between dental caries prevalence in primary
teeth and first permanent molars of children in mixed dentition stage moreover to correlate it with other
associated factors such as: age of child, sex, tooth brushing frequency, dietary habits and mother attitude
toward their children’s oral health
Methods: This observational (cross sectional study) was Conducted on 1000 Egyptian child (421 boys
and 579 girls) aged from 6-10 years where visual and tactile dental examination for each child was done
on dental chair using diagnostic set (mirror and probe) and def and DMF were recorded using
examination chart and a questionnaire was filled by parents to collect information related to children’s
oral health, dietary habits and mother’s attitude toward child’s oral health.
Results: ninty-two percent of these children had dental caries with mean def: 5.37±2.45; mean DMF:
1.05±1.25. def and DMF were positively correlated with age, frequency of sweet consumption, while
negatively correlated with frequency of child tooth brushing, frequency of visiting the dentist, parental
care about their child teeth. There was statistically significant correlation between def and DMF.
Conclusion: The study found statistically significant associations between caries prevalence in primary
teeth and first permanent molars.
