Abstract

Primary benign and malignant fibular tumors are rare. There are many types including giant cell tumor, osteochondroma, osteosarcomas, and others as Ewing sarcoma. Surgical management is essential in treatment .
Aim of work: Assessment and reviewing of overall survival, event free survival , post treatment complications and clinico-pathological characterestics of all eligible patients who had Primary fibular tumors.
Patients and methods: This was a retrospective study conducted on 22 patients with primary fibular tumors underwent fibulectomy at NCI,CU between January 2010 and January 2020
Results: Most common presentation of fibula tumors included swelling (100%) and pain (81.8%) . The proximal fibula was more commonly involved (81.8%). Most of cases pathology were osteosarcoma (40.9%), followed by Ewing sarcoma (27.3%). (72.7% ) of cases resected with free safety margins. (36.4%) underwent proximal fibulectomy, (22.7%)segmental resection, (13.6%) Amputation. (65% )of the included patients had preservation of peroneal nerve . 68.2% had received neoadjuvant therapy beside the definite management. Overall survival at three years was 50.2%, Event free survival at three years was 42.9%.
Conclusion: Fibula involves some surgical difficulties because of its contribution to knee joint, ankle stability, close relation to neurovascular structures especially peroneal nerve. With a precise assessment and proper surgery complete tumor resection could be achieved with decreased morbidity.Risk of recurrence still notable outcome difficulty
