Abstract

Mindfulness is a state of mind achieved by centering awareness of oneself on present moment, and at the same time addressing and accepting one’s own thoughts, feelings, emotions, actions, sensory experience of the body as well as the environment that surrounds us. Mindfulness as an element of consciousness has been acknowledged to promote positivity and well-being among individuals. A non-judgmental practice of focusing our attention and awareness on the present moment (Sharma et al., 2022).Innovative behavior refers to the introduction and application of new ideas, products, processes, and procedures to a person’s work role, work unit, or organization. Innovative behavior can be carried out both by an individual organizational member or groups of individuals within an organization. It is abroader concept than creativity and encompasses a variety of behaviors involved in the generation,promotion, and implementation of new ideas (Yuan & Marquardt, 2021).The study aimed to assess head nurses’ mindfulness; it’s relation to their staff nurses’ innovative work behavior. This aim could be achieved through the following questions: What are the levels of mindfulness as perceived by head nurses at Menoufia University Hospital? What are the levels of innovative work behaviors as perceived by the staff nurses at Menoufia University Hospital? What is the relation between head nurses’ mindfulness and staff nurses innovative work behaviors at Menoufia University Hospital?
Research design: A descriptive correlational research design was used to conduct this study.
Setting: The study was conducted at Menoufia University Hospital at Shebin El-Kom, Menoufia. The study was conducted at selected departments as inpatient departments (Medical, Surgical, Pediatric, Obstetrics, Chest and Orthopedic departments) and specialty units (Adult ICUs, Pediatric ICU, Emergency unit, Operative rooms, Hemodialysis unit and Neonate unit).
Subjects: The subjects of this study consisted of all head nurses working at the above mentioned study setting who was available at the study time and accept to participate in the study. Total number of head nurses at the above mentioned study setting was (40) head nurses. Also included a simple random sample of staff nurses who are working in the above mentioned study setting (255) staff nurses.Data collection Instruments Two instruments was used to collect data: The first instrument: Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ); It was aimed to assess the level of mindfulness of head nurses. It consisted of two parts: Part one: personal characteristics the head nurses as (age, gender, level of nursing education, years of experience and working department). Part two: consisted of 39 items divided into 5 dimensions as follows: observe (8 items), describe (8 items), act with awareness (8 items), non-judging (8 items), and non-reactive (7 items).The Second Instrument: Innovative Behavior Inventory: This instrument was aimed to assess innovative work behavior of staff nurses. It consisted of two parts: Part one: personal characteristics the staff nurses as (age, gender, level of nursing education, years of experience and working department). Part two: It consisted of 23 items and it was categorized under 7 main dimensions, which are: Idea generation (3 items), Ideasearch (3 items), Idea communication (4 items), Implementation starting activities (3 items), Involving
others (3 items), Overcoming obstacles (4 items), Innovation outputs (3 items).
The study was generated the following findings:
*the majority of head nurses were in the age group 40 years or more, females, married, had Bachelor of Nursing Science, had more than 15 years of experience in nursing and had experience range from 5 years to less than 15 years of experience in nursing administration.
*According to studied staff nurses, the majority of staff nurses range from 20 to less than 30 years, females, married, had Associate Degree of Nursing. About to their years of experience in nursing and had experience range from 5 years to less than 15 years of experience in nursing.
* About two-thirds of head nurses had moderate level of mindfulness.
* The highest mean score of mindfulness dimension as perceived by head nurses was related to describing dimension, while the lowest mean score was related to acting with awareness dimension.
* Near to half of staff nurses had moderate level regarding innovative work behavior.
* The highest mean score was related to involving others dimension, while the lowest mean scores was related to implementing starting activities dimension for staff nurses.
* There was a highly positive statistical significant correlation between total head nurses’ perceived of mindfulness and total perceived innovative work behavior among staff nurses.
* There was a highly statistical significant correlation between mindfulness dimensions among head nurses.
* There was a highly statistical significant correlation between levels of innovative work behavior dimensions among staff nurses.
* There was statistical significance relation between age as a personal characteristics and head nurses’ perception level to mindfulness. Also, there was highly statistical significance relation between educational qualification as a personal characteristics and head nurses’ perception level to mindfulness.
* There was statistical significance relation between educational qualifications and years of experience
in nursing as a personal characteristics and staff nurses’ perception level toward innovative work behavior.The following points are recommended:
At hospital administration level:• Need to develop activities that improve mindfulness and encourage head nurses to participate in these activities.
• Nursing managers need to create safe, effective work environment with sufficient resources that enable staff nurses to search for new ideas to develop their work.
At educational level:
• Hospital administration need to collaborate with staff development department to provide continuing education programs to develop head nurses’ mindfulness in workplace.
• Innovative work behavior programs need be involved into orientation of new staff nurses.
At research level:
• Conduction of research studies is needed for better identification of factors that improve and impede mindfulness among head nurses in workplace.
• Further research is needed to identify strategies to motivate individuals to develop their innovative work behavior.
