Abstract Coincide with the Egyptian government trend in the last period for the development and improvement of the highway network in Egypt and its eagerness to raise the efficiency of the network with the required quality, it was necessary to ensure that the pavement will perform its intended function over its design life (or time) and under the conditions (or environment) encountered during operation and will be maintained at adequate levels from a user’s point of view, Thus it is important to accurately determine the Reliability that a pavement section designed using the process will perform satisfactorily over the traffic and environmental conditions for the design period. The 2008 ECP Design Code consists mainly of a purely empirical design methodology, in which the traffic distribution that is expected for a new pavement facility is converted into ESALs that are then used to calculate the required thickness of the pavement structure so that the expected traffic does not exceed the capacity of the pavement structure. Since using a representative fixed value for each design variable, such as the mean, will produce an average indication of the pavement deterioration. However, the field variation of some important variables in the pavement design process, such as the thickness of the different layers, is considerable and even small deviations can result in significant changes to the expected performance of the pavement structure. This research aims to statistically characterize the most important design inputs that affect the pavement performance. In order to Assess the variation effect of design parameters on the pavement predicted performance using three reliability methods and five different agencies, and compare it with the designed ECP reliability. the reliability analysis was performed based on both rutting and fatigue failure of the five different agencies to evaluate the effect of taking temperature impact on the pavement predicted performance. The most important research findings were: the pavement reliability prediction was significantly affected by not only by variation of design parameters but also adding temperature to the variation of pavement design parameters. and also, reliability prediction differs from one regression model of different agencies that calculating the pavement life to another. The nearest agency to 2008 ECP methodology (from the five different agencies) that can represent the rutting and fatigue pavement life is Shell Research agency. And the nearest reliability analysis method to 2008 ECP methodology (from the three different methods) that can represent the rutting and fatigue pavement life is Design Optimization Tool (FORM spreadsheet) method. Thus, The MEPDG and the variation of design parameters should be taking into our consideration in the next update of our ECP instead of using purely empirical design methodology. |
