This study discussed the impact of the energy sources discovered in the eastern Mediterranean region on the energy security of Israel which has recently transformed from an energy-importing country to an energy-exporting one. Such a dramatic change enabled Israel to employ this issue in enhancing its regional position.
By adopting an active multi - dimensional foreign policies; some of them mainly depended on cooperation aspects and attempts to break its political isolation in its Arab environment; and others on domination and unilateral exploitation of energy sources, Israel has endeavored to become a regional center for the trade of energy resources and a bridge linking international markets in Asia and Europe as well.
The central importance of these discoveries lied in the fact that they had transcended the aspects of the chronic conflict the region suffered from by giving priority to economic advantages over traditional political issues through working intensively on adapting the issue of energy to be a fuel for both cooperation and regional integration. However, Israel played a role in changing the regional system, which was relatively stable for many years, bringing the region into a state of alignment and polarization that led to an emergence of new regional actors and an expansion of the living space (Lebensraum) in the Eastern Mediterranean, which would threaten the regional stability. The study also discussed in parallel the impact of a series of offshore discoveries in the eastern Mediterranean on Arab national security as a direct model for the regional and international interventions in Syria, because of its geopolitical location as a corridor of gas pipelines to reach the international markets. These discoveries intersected with the beginning of the hitherto raging political transformations emergence in the region. Interpreting the relationship between the rise of Israeli energy and the decline of Arab national security concept would have future repercussions affecting the typical background and the image of the Middle East.
The study concluded a results as the following: gas deposits in the eastern Mediterranean contributed to strengthen of Israel’s energy security. Israel have successfully penetrated the Arab regimes in the way enabling Israel to ensure its status as a regional power. In addition, the conflict of interest between Eastern Mediterranean countries leads towards intensifying the conflict and undermining the cooperation opportunities.
