Abstract

Background:Fever in children is a common presenting complaint during health visits in primary health care centers. Parents frequently have concerns about fever and perceive it as a disease rather than a symptom of illness. Mothers’ practice of fever management varies according to their background and experience. Setting:The present study was conducted at the primary health care centers in Port Said City, Egypt.Sample: The study included amultistage sample of 320 mothers, who manage their children with fever at primary health care centers in Port Said City and it is recruited for 6 months’ period. Tools: one tool consisted of three parts was used to collect data that included, socio-demographic characteristics’ of studied mothers, assessment of mothers’ knowledge about fever and its management as well as assessment of the mothers’ reported practices about fever management. Results: the present study demonstrated that the high percentage of the studied mothers(65%-75.6%) had poor knowledge and inadequate practices respectively while, ( 22.5%) of them had good practices about fever and it’s management. Conclusion:Majority of mothers’ knowledge and practices regarding the management of fever were deficient and inadequate, and most of them overused fever medications.
