Abstract Natural products often provide new main compounds that can be used for drug discovery. Because of the complexity of natural product discovery, pharmaceutical companies have paid little attention to it in the past couple of decades. A recent article that was published in 2022 offered a description of different modern approaches utilized in drug discovery from all-natural sources, underscoring that the most crucial first step in the process of drug discovery is the selection of plants targeted for screening, which involves 3 approaches as follows, selection-based on Ethnopharmacological understanding (based on the empirical experience), random approaches, as well as technique based on conventional medical system. Then, the second step is the authentication of the collected materials, which is regarded as the fundamental starting point in the development of natural products including taxonomic, chemometric, spectroscopic, microscopic, macroscopic, immunoassays as well as DNA fingerprinting evaluation. Eventually, the final step is the extraction and separation of natural compounds utilizing biological activity-guided fractionation. (Pirintsos et al., 2022) |
