Abstract

Introduction and Purpose: Metabolic syndrome is a major health problem all over the world. In Egypt, its prevalence among females is about 50%. The current study was conducted to assess the effect of patient education and lifestyle modification on metabolic syndrome components. Subjects: 120 metabolic syndrome adult females (60 intervention and 60 controls) selected randomly from Zagazig University outpatient clinics. Methodology: This is a randomized controlled clinical trial; Patients were randomly allocated into intervention and control groups. Intervention group received personalized patient education about healthy life style. Control group received the traditional management. Assessment: We compared lifestyle habits (diet and exercise), metabolic syndrome components (waist circumference, blood pressure, HDL, TG, fasting blood glucose) between 2 groups before and 3 months after intervention. Results: Both groups showed significant improvement in all metabolic syndrome components but the mean change was significantly higher in intervention than control group. After 3 months, 63.4% of intervention group showed reversal of their metabolic syndrome versus 15% of control group. Conclusion: Patient education and life style modifications improve all metabolic syndrome components and is significantly better than the traditional management. We recommend all physicians to apply patient education and life style modifications on metabolic syndrome patients
