Abstract

Objective: To compare the results of stripping vs. Radiofrequency wave ablation in the treatment of superficial venous incompetence resulting in chronic venous disease (CVD). Design: Prospective randomized comparative trial. ıMethods: 22 patients affected by CVD, CEAP clinical class 2-3, were randomized to saphenous stripping or to Radiofrequency ablation.Clinical, radiological and patient-based outcomes were recorded at 1, 3 and 6months after the intervention. Results: The clinical outcome showed a primary rate of occlusion 90% in the radiofrequency group versus a primary occlusion rate of 100% in the conventional surgery group. In the RF group, there was a significant statistical difference in the GSV diameters throughout the follow up period of 1, 3 and 6 months with a P value < 0.001. Conclusion: RFA is a minimally invasive procedure. Its potential early benefits, by avoiding groin dissection and GSV stripping, have been confirmed by the findings from this trial.Current evidence based on randomized trials consistently demonstrates significant early benefits after RFA in suitable patients with varicose veins
