Abstract In the domain of high-performance buildings, the envelope has become the major factor in the innovative development. The term smart has been used in reference to materials and surfaces. Smart materials; as systems that own embedded technological functions that cover environmental responses, either through internal properties or external energy exchanges. Smart materials have four more characteristics immediacy, transiency, self-actuation, selectivity. Smart surfaces and materials act as an important factor to achieve high-performance envelopes because of their intrinsic properties. Recently, many smart materials are used to achieve high-performance building facades; they appear in the form of glazing, coating, and films. This thesis expresses how smart materials can help in achieving building with high-performance facades |
