Abstract Necrotizing enterocolitis is the most frequent medico-surgical emergency and the most classic cause of intestinal perforations in neonates. It is a very severe disease with a mortality rate of 10-50%, depending on the degree of prematurity, the delay in diagnosis, and the extension of intestinal damage. Abdominal US examination in neonates with bowel pathology is considered the diagnostic modality of choice as it is non-invasive, widely available, relatively low cost and mobile (bed side device) with absence of radiation which, enables frequently repeated examinations. Also, modern ultrasound devices with high-frequency (high resolution) probes and harmonic imaging significantly improve examination of the bowel by offering better overall image quality, better visualization of bowel pathology and associated changes in real time and color doppler. Its only limitation being highly operator dependent method |
