Abstract Background: Type 2 diabetes is an increasing worldwide health problem. Most of the interest in the role of nutrients in diabetes is centered on macronutrients, but a micronutrient, iron, is also closely associated with diabetes. Aim of work: Study biomarkers of iron metabolism including serum ferritin, TSAT, and iron in diabetic and prediabetic patients. Subjects and methods: This is cross sectional study conducted on a cohort of 50 patients, 25 patients with IGT and 25 patients newly diagnosed with type 2 DM and 20 healthy control of matched age and both sex are involved. All patients enrolled in the study were subjected to full history taking, thorough examination, laboratory investigations including Iron, TIBC, ferritin, insulin, lipid profile, fasting blood glucose, 2HPP, urea, creatinine, CBC, ALT and AST. Results: We found that T2DM patients have significant higher body weight and BMI than prediabetic and control subjects, also statistically significant difference in serum iron between the studied groups, no statistical significance in serum ferritin between the studied groups. Also we found positive correlation of serum iron and insulin resistance in T2DM, significant positive correlation of serum ferritin with LDL and negative correlation with HDL in T2DM, positive correlation of ferritin with cholesterol and TG in IGT group and TSAT was negatively correlated with HbA1c, BMI and TIBC and is positively correlated to iron and creatinine and Hemoglobin among the studied groups |
