Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the results of using simple syringe fixator (syringe barrel and k-wires) in treatment of phalangeal and metacarpal fractures regarding union, functional outcome and complications. Background: Fractures of the hand constitute 10% of all fractures. The majority of these fractures are amenable to conservative treatment with good outcomes. The management of unstable digital fractures is difficult and the results are not always satisfactory. Methods: eighty patients with 86 metacarpals and phalangeal fractures were managed by close reduction and external fixation using external fixation technique by simple syringe fixator (syringe barrel and k-wires) from October 2014 to June 2016. Results: The mean radiological union time was 5.55 week weeks. The mean final total active motion was 220.94 degrees. Total active motion excellent in 68 digits (82.92%) and was good in 1 digit (1.21%) and was fair in 6 digits (7.31%) and was poor in 7 digits (8.53%). Secondary procedures were done in 2 patients. Complications were encountered in 28 patients (32.55%). All patients returned to their pre-injurious jobs and activities
