Abstract

This investigation was carried out at the central laboratory for date palm researches and development, Agricultural research centre, ministry of Agriculture, Giza, Egypt during two successive seasons 2013 and 2014. The aim of the current work is to select male date palm (phoenix dactylifera L.) that produces pollen grains with high viability for their direct impact on the quality and quantity of the fruit yield. This study included 26 males, i.e. Bartmouda, siwi and barhi resulted from cultivated seeds. A 26 female of Siwi cultivar were included. The obtained results indicated that Barhi male number 9 had the highest pollen grains and viability %. Also, the results showed that Siwi pollen grains had the highest total carbohydrates, total amino acids, free amino acids, N, K, P and Mg concentrations. Meanwhile, barhi pollen grains had the highest Ca, Zn, B and Cu %. Bartmouda pollens had the highest Fe and Mn %. Barhi pollen grains showed higher pollen grain dimensionas as well as contained large number of pores. The results of physical properties of fruits indicated that male number (10) of Siwi gave highest fruit and flesh weight, the male number (9) had the least seed weight. Meanwhile, the male number (3 and 10) of Barhi gave highest fruit size and male number (2 and 6) gave highest fruit length. The bartmouda male number (2) gave highest fruit diameter. The results of fruits chemical properties indicated that the male number (1) of siwi gave the highest dry matter, the male numbers (10) of both Siwi and Barhi gave the highest TSS, the male number (12) of Siwi gave the least fruit acidity and barhi male number (10) gave the highest total sugar. The Siwi male number (11) gave the highest total nitrogen and protein %, whereas the male barhi number (7) gave the highest total amino acids %. Referring to the whole results previously obtained, it can be concluded that Siwi male No. 10 is the male of choice since its obtained fruits recorded the best fruit
