Abstract

The Achilles tendon is the thickest and strongest tendon in the human body. It is the major plantar flexor of the foot and contributes to the maintenance of the upright position. The Achilles tendon is the most frequent site of injury in the foot. Its superficial location lends it to excellent evaluation by ultrasonography. Ultrasound is an excellent modality for initial imaging of suspected achilles tendon lesions because of patient comfort during the examination, affordability, availability and accuracy of the test in expert hands. Continuing advances in US have enabled evaluation of Achilles lesions with accuracy and efficiency in a cost-effective manner
