Abstract

Sepsis is a complex syndrome caused by an uncontrolled systemic inflammatory response to a documented or suspected infection and characterized by multiple manifestations, which can result in dysfunction or failure of one or more organs and even death . Adiponectin , the most abundant known secreted factor produced by adipocytes , was originally identified by four independent groups in the mid-1990s using different experimental approaches , in both mice and humans . Adiponectin is connected to the inflammation through multiple pathways: there is a reciprocal correlation among the plasma levels of CRP, fibrinogen and adiponectin . Adiponectin is depleted in sepsis worsening outcome through an increased proinflammatory cytokines production , moreover it has been showed able to neutralize lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in a rat model
