Abstract Viruses diffuse in societies due to physical contact between agents, so are ideas and behaviors that transmit from man to man through social contact. Toleration, as a social behavior or a desired virtue for democratic regimes, can be studied as a social phenomenon emerging from social actions and rational decisions. The question of how toleration prevails is problematic and needs detailed exploration. In this study, toleration is studied from a cooperative perspective. An Agent-Based Model (ABM) of toleration is constructed based upon a model of cooperation namely: the Continuous Iterated Prisoners{u2019} Dilemma (CIPD). The aim is to examine whether toleration can be explained as a cooperative behavior using the CIPD. The ABM is then validated through internet-based data collected from Facebook. The data collected is the text of discussions, i.e. Facebook comments, posted on Tamaroud Facebook page during the period starting from 30th June to 5th July 2013. Afterwards, the text of discussions was analyzed for toleration. When the Facebook data is used to validate the computational model, the results were not promising. However, when a modification for the model was suggested, the validity has improved |
