Abstract

Primary school stage is a crucial period defined by profound changes as student transition from early childhood to adolescence, although primary students during this stage develop the ability to solve problems in a logical way, they are also not able to think abstractly (Langer & Steinebach, 2019). Student’s well-being is an important indicator of physical, psychological and social health, also positive emotions, negative emotions and school satisfaction are seen also as important components in the student health (Ayala-Nunes et al., 2018).
The present study aimed to assess effect of school environment on student health through:
• Assessing student health status.
• Assessing school environment.
• Assessing student satisfaction.
• Assessing different environmental aspects affecting school student health.
Study design:
A descriptive correlational design was utilized.
Subjects and methods:
This study was conducted at 3 schools in El-Fayoum governorate were chosen randomly.
Sampling:
Multistage random sampling technique was used to get the sample size of 180 student of fifth and sixth grade at primary school in El-Fayoum governorate.
Data collection tool:
Three tools were used for data collection:
First: a student assessment questionnaire: It was developed by the investigator in the light of literature review. It was written in simple Arabic language to suit the understanding level of selected grade of primary school student, it consisted of the following parts;
 Part one:
Demographic characteristics of primary school student including; age, gender, birth order, family size, father education level, father job, mother education level, mother job, and classroom.
Part two:
Student satisfaction in the school environment as school environment cleanliness, school supplies, school health services, school canteen and school safety.
 Part three:
Student present and past complain include:
1. Physical complain as (headache, stomach ache, backache, and fatigue from school activities).
2. Psychological complain as (feel nervous, school friends bother, feel depressed mood, feel sleep difficulty, fear from teachers and fear to go to school).
3. Social complain as (avoid social interaction, avoid participation in school activities, difficult to make friends in the school, and difficult to take responsibility).
Second: student medical record about past and present history includes (nervous, respiratory, circulatory and digestive system).
Third: Observation checklist for school environment through;
 Part one:
The physical component of school environment including (number of floor, number of classes, location, outer wall of school status, playground, stairway, class room status, desk and seats, ventilation, light, water supply, sanitation and facilities availability (canteen, library, music room, computer lab, and science lab).
Part two:
Social Environment as (school climate, student relationships, collaboration to social and emotional learning, teachers treat student with respect, all students participate in school activities, teacher give social reinforcement, teacher physically punish student after wrong behavior, prevent bullying at school and prevent school violence).
 Part three:
School health services as (presence of a school nurse, clinical room cleanliness, ventilation, light, presence of (masks, hand hygiene equipment, alcohol, first aid equipment, thermometer, medical equipment) medication administration, student medical record, communicable disease surveillance, referral services, health education services, health appraisal through observation, screening tests and immunization).
The present study revealed that:
About 50.0% of primary school students aged 12 years, 36.1 % of them were third sibling, 55.0% of student’s fathers had secondary education level, 27.2% of them had satisfied with their school environment, 83.3% of them had past health complain, 11.7% of students had present health complain, 77.2% of past health status of students was healthy, and 76.7% of present health status of students was healthy.
According to the school environment, the findings revealed that 66.7% of total component of school environment was adequate and 33.3% of it was not adequate.
There was a statistically significant relation between primary school student’s health and their school environment, and there was statistical significant relation between primary student’s health status (past and present health status) total school health services.
The present study suggests the following recommendation:
o Health education program to;
 Inform primary school students about school environment positive and negative effects on their health and how to deal with these effects.
 Teach primary school students how to express their feeling without embarrassment, and how to think before act.
