Abstract

Abuse of prescription opioids and its health outcomes has turned into a major public health issue in different parts of the world in recent years. Though the scope of the problem and the type of opioids vary across different regions.
Opioid use disorder is chronic relapsing disorder. Through activation of the brain reward neurocircuits, it increasingly engages anti-reward neurocircuits that drive adverse emotional states and relapse.
This study was conducted on 40 opioid-dependent patients, admitted inpatients for twelve 90-min sessions of DBT, with pre- and post- DBT assessment.
The results reveal that almost all participants had high difficulties in emotion regulation that showed significant improvement after twelve 90-min sessions of DBT.
The results reveal that 67.5% of patients have a problem which needs treatment according to the addiction severity index before the treatment while after the treatment 52.5% of them have a problem which needs treatment.
It noteworthy that difficulties with emotion regulation was strongly correlated with severity of addiction. And both showed significant improvement after dialectical behavioural therapy.
This study demonstrated that DBT significantly decrease the relapse according to the improvement of the addiction severity index and difficulties in emotion regulation.
