Abstract

Pregnancy is a critical period during which good maternal nutrition is a key factor influencing the health of both mother and child.
As well as following a healthy, balanced diet during pregnancy, staying physically active is also important, to promote general health and well-being, and also to help prevent excess maternal weight gain.
Excessive weight gain in pregnancy is highly undesirable for several reasons as fetal mortality, preterm delivery and neural tube defect. The formal recommendation for pregnancy weight gain is 9-11.4 Kg.
So, in this study we focus not only on the aspect of the controversy surrounding optimal maternal weight gain ranges, but also on the dietary pattern itself and how healthy is it?
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of dietary pattern on weight gain during pregnancy in females attending primary health care units in Diarb Negm district.
