Abstract

Since the flexible pavement was being constructed and used, simultaneously asphalt rehabilitation process has become one of the major priorities in order to obtain an effective and endurable road network. Therefore, identifying and repairing asphalt roads have caught many agencies attention. However, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Transport, in the last 4 years more than 4,500 kilometers of newly constructed roads were implemented. Similarly, over 5,000 kilometers of development of the existing road network are under construction in this time period, and therefore tackling the issue of paved-roads defects is crucial, and it must be taken into account. In order to expand into using different materials for repairing potholes, this study was conducted as a trail to find a new asphalt cold mix for patching using three different types of binder (Cold-Rc, Asphalt emulsion (brought form ASPPC company in Alexandria, Egypt), and bitumen), and using two different types of gradation, Texas gradation recommended for patching (according to Texas department of transportation), and 4-G gradation according to Egyptian code of practice. Five samples were prepared to be tested according to AASHTO – T-245, the first sample was prepared using Cold-Rc as a binder and Texas gradation recommended for patching, the second one was prepare using bitumen as a binder and Texas gradation recommended for patching, the third one was prepared using asphalt emulsion as a binder and Texas gradation recommended for patching, the fourth sample was prepared using 4-G gradation, and emulsion as a binder, the last one was prepared using 4-G gradation, and bitumen as a binder. For the five samples, the results regarding the stability and flow were compared, and finally the correlation between flow and stability under the same circumstances was conducted with stating the recommendations based on the result.
