Abstract

Burnout is a syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, cynicism and low sense of professional efficacy. Commonly affecting Medical students, burnout can lead to physical and psychological disorders as well as affecting the students’ quality of life throughout their training period and later on may contribute to medical errors during medical practice. This cross-sectional analytical study aimed at assessing Burnout Syndrome and its predictors among 296 medical students from first, fourth and sixth academic grades in Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University. Specific objectives were to estimate the prevalence of burnout syndrome among the medical students, explore the association between different variables and burnout syndrome and to determine its predictors. A questionnaire was designed to collect data about demographics, lifestyle habits in addition to different study-related stressors among medical students. The tool used to measure burnout was the Maslach burnout inventory- student survey (MBI-SS).The prevalence of high emotional exhaustion was 38.1%, high cynicism was 32.4%, low professional efficacy 31%. The three components of Burnout Syndrome were significantly associated with gender, lack of adequate sleep, little or no leisure time, physical inactivity, chronic illness, having low academic scores, attending private classes and worrying about future income and choosing a specialty. There is a great need to develop a strategic plan designed to promote mental health and mitigate different stressors among undergraduate students
