Abstract

Cataract extraction is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the world. Successful surgeries lead to a marked improvement of vision and quality of life. (Lamoureux et al., 2011) Phacoemulsification is the gold standard technique for cataract extraction. Undesirable consequences of phacoemulsification may occur intraoperatively or in the postoperative period. Fortunately, complications resulting in permanent vision loss are rare with modern surgical techniques and technology in the hands of experienced cataract surgeons. (Bobrow, 2014a) Compared to experienced surgeons, young trainees and residents have a higher rate of complications as this technique has a learning curve. (Haripriya et al., 2012) However, good assistance and supervision of the residents during learning phacoemulsification should decrease the overall rate of complications and improve the final visual outcome
