Abstract

Background: Good oral health during pregnancy can not only improve the quality of life of the pregnant mother, but also potentially reduce complications during pregnancy. Aim: this study aims to evaluate the effect of dental care information support and dental treatment for pregnant women with gingivitis on the course of pregnancy. Design: A quasi-experimental design was adopted to fulfill the aim. Purposive sample of 100 pregnant women was recruited from two Maternal Child Health Centers at El- Fayoum Governorate based on certain inclusion criteria. Two identical groups were formulated, 50 women each, group (A) as study group and group (B) as control group. six tools were used to collect the needed data,1) Maternal assessment interviewing questionnaire; 2) Dental care information tool,3) Gingival index; 4) Plaque index ;5) Probing depth 6)Maternal evaluation and follow up tool. Results: Improvement in the mean pre-post knowledge and practice scores with statistical significant differences were found between groups (p = <0.05). There is an improvement in the mean scores of gingival index (GI) ; bleeding on probing(BOP) and the plaque index (PI) score at baseline and after four weeks with statistical significant differences were found (p = <0.05). The risk of adverse pregnancy outcome decreased among the study group (n=6) as compared to control group (n=29) with statistical significant differences were found (p = < 0.05). Neonatal complications among the study group were lesser than the control group 12% (n=6) compared to 63.3% (n=31) (p= < 0.05)
