Abstract

Background: Diabetic neuropathy comprises a number of conditions affecting somatic and autonomic nerves and considered the most common long-term complication in diabetes mellitus.Accurate diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy is possible with the use of clinical and electrophysiological tests. In recent years with improved technology, ultrasonography has been regarded as a promising inexpensive and more comfortable diagnostic tool that can be used as an alternative method for detecting neuropathies. Objectives:The purpose of this study was to study the usefulness of ultrasonography for the diagnosis of polyneuropathy in diabetic patients by examining the median and ulnar nerves. Methods: In this study a total of 60 Patients were examined (30 of whom were clinically diagnosed with Uncontrolled type II diabetes Mellitus complicated with peripheral polyneuropathy,15 patients diagnosed with type II diabetes mellitus with no peripheral polyneuropathy and 15 normal individuals). Nerve conduction study was performed on the upper limbs. Median and ulnar nerve cross-sectional areas were measured at the wrist and forearm levels by ultrasound. Furthermore, patients diagnosed with any inflammatory disorder, any malignancy, consume alcohol, had a previous carpal tunnel operation, who complained of ulnar entrapment or those with isolated ulnar nerve entrapment based on electrodiagnostic tests were excluded. We tried to find if there were positive findings in the ultrasound that could not be detected in the nerve conduction test and correlate these findings with the patient{u2019}s symptoms and clinical examination
