Abstract

Background: End-of-life care can be a major cause of stress in intensive care unit. The critical care nurses provide care for terminally, dying patients and their family on a regular basis, this can result in critical care nurses experiencing deep emotional reactions as well as grief. Aim of the study: The aim of the current study was to explore the lived experience of critical care nurses in providing care for terminally ill patients. Methods: Design: Hermeneutic phenomenological design was used for the current study. Settings: Different ICUs at El Manial University Hospital (units 1, 2, 3) and intensive care unit at National Cancer Institute. Participants: A Purposive sample was used in the current study. The size is often determined on the basis of theoretical saturation (the point in data collection when new data no longer bring additional insights to the research questions). In the current study the researcher reached the saturation point after 17 participants. Data collection tools: three tools were utilized for data collection: Personal background questionnaire, interview guide, and, Audio tape recording as an instrument. Results: The current study revealed that more than half (58.82%) of the participants were in age group (28-37), the majority (70.58%) were female nurses. More than half of these nurses (52.94%) had Technical Nursing Institute education. Findings of the current study identified four main themes in exploring the lived experiences of critical care nurses in providing care for terminally ill patients:(I) Feelings about caring for terminally ill patient; (II) Providing the best care; (III) Coping; (IV) Unforgettable cases.
