Abstract

Background: Non melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs), which encompass basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), are the most common forms of cancer. Micro-ribonucleic acids (miRNAs) are small non-protein coding RNAs that play an important role in physiological cellular processes. MiRNA-205 and miRNA-31 are among the most frequently altered miRNAs, exhibiting aberrant expression in multiple human malignancies. Objectives: The current study aimed at studying miRNA-205 and miRNA-31 expression in BCC and SCC skin biopsies in comparison to sun exposed and non-exposed skin of healthy controls, in order to evaluate their possible role in the pathogenesis of NMSC. Methods: This study included 15 patients with BCC, 15 patients with SCC and 20 age and sex matched healthy controls (10 controls with biopsies taken from sun exposed areas and 10 controls with biopsies taken from non-exposed areas). Skin biopsies were taken from all participants for assessment of miRNA-205 and miRNA-31 levels by real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results: MiRNA-205 levels were significantly lower in BCC as well as SCC than controls, whether sun-exposed or non-exposed. MiRNA-31 levels were significantly higher in BCC as well as SCC than its levels in controls, whether sun-exposed or non-exposed. There was no significant relation between miRNA-205 or miRNA-31 levels and either age, sex, duration, site, shape or size in all the studied groups. There was no significant correlation between miRNA-205 and miRNA-31 in BCC patients, SCC patients, sun exposed controls or non-exposed controls
