Abstract

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in the world. In cancer, cells divide and grow uncontrollably, forming malignant tumors and invade nearby parts of the body. Chemotherapy, being one of the most common strategy in cancer treatment causes many side effects to the patients. The major goal in cancer treatment is the targeted delivery of the chemotherapeutics to the tumor site while avoiding the adverse effects. The application of nanotechnology to medicine helps to overcome limitations related to chemotherapy. Nanoparticles (NPs) with enhanced surface properties are able to diffuse with greater ease inside the tumor cells delivering a high amount of drug selectively to tumor cells with significant reduced toxicity. In the near future, the use of nanotechnology could revolutionize the entire cancer therapy. Nanocarrier mediated drug delivery has emerged as a successful strategy to enhance delivery of therapeutics to tumors. This technology has enabled the development of particles with nano size that can be fabricated from a multitude of materials in a variety of compositions including polymeric, dendrimeric and magnetic nanoparticles. Out of all kinds of nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) seem to have attracted the most interests in terms of their potential application. Synthesis of Ag NPs has been of considerable interest during the past decades. Ag NPs can be synthesized using various methods. The most popular preparation of Ag colloids is chemical reduction of silver salts by sodium borohydride or sodium citrate
