Abstract Expansive clays are considered one of the problematic soils as they exhibit large volume changes with the change in moisture content. Such soils may cause damages to structures, utilities, pavement, etc. Unless special measures are taken to reduce the risk of harm. Traditionally, swelling soils are completely or partially replaced with non-swelling engineered fill. Alternatively, soil stabilization techniques are applied to reduce swelling potential using locally available materials. Mixing swelling clays with lime or cementis commonly used as an improved technique in a highway project. Researchers recently suggested that the recycling of waste(such as carpets fiber and scrap tires) as a solution reduce swelling potential. This study investigates how mixing swelling clay with granulated scrap tires in combination with cement or lime on its properties. Scrap tires are characterized by their longevity and availability. Further, to using scrap tires has apositive impact on the environment became of the difficulty of disposing of them. Samples were prepared in the laboratory by mixing the expansive soi lwith the scrap tires(5%, 10%,and15%)relative to the weight of the soil.Cement or lime were mixed at(0%,2%,4%, and 6%) of the weight of the soil to the mixture. The effects of varying the percentage of tire, cement, and lime on the swelling and strength properties of the bentonite are presented guideline for choosing the optimum contents of scrap tires, cement, and lime are provided |
