Abstract

Present study is aimed to geotechnical assessment of some selected sections of limestone rock lies within the south western part of middle Mokattam plateau. In a trail to make alarm for administrators of this district to take note that; random new urban encroachment of middle plateau and unprotected slopes of upper plateau will encounter the same disaster of El-Dwaiqa and Manshit Naser. Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil engineering concerned with the engineering behaviour of the earth{u2019}s material and therefore the potential risks posed. It includes the disk study, site investigation, ground engineering design, risk assessments and specifications. Firstly, the geological properties of the study area evaluated from reviewing previous study and check them through field observation. Secondly, the engineering properties of the ground are evaluated by operating some geotechnical laboratory tests on soil and rock of study area. This includes strength, stability assessment and other engineering parameters that describe the ground surface. Finally, the geotechnical risks may arise from soft or weak ground are evaluated. It may include groundwater, landslides, quarrying and sinkhole. This assessment will be providing us with effective solutions for proposed developments and restoration projects. It is very useful in reducing the total costs, optimizing timescale and increasing asset value
