Abstract

Background: Laryngeal carcinoma represents 4.5% of all malignancies and 28% of cancers of the upper aero digestive tract. Quality of life measures seek to obtain a comprehensive, multidimensional picture of the patient{u2019}s {u2018}{u2018}total health related experience.{u2019}{u2019} Objectives: To assess the QOL scores of patients with advanced laryngeal cancer after treatment and compare between different treatment modalities. Materials and Methods: One hundred patients with advanced laryngeal carcinoma who fulfill the inclusion criteria, who presented to KasrAlainy teaching hospital, Cairo University were recruited, during the period from January 2016 to April 2017 were recruited. Upon written communication by E-mail with the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), a granted permission was sent to use the EORTC quality of life questionnaire (QLQ) (the Arabic forum). The questionnaires were administered to patients by interview because of the high rate of illiteracy. Conclusion:Post-treatment QOL is a decisive factor in choosing between different therapies that give comparable results in terms of survival rates. Standardized questionnaires of QOL can offer an easier way of communication with the patient and revealing unexpected treatment impacts and nonmedical problems facing our patients. Recommendation: Health education about the role of smoking in developing laryngeal carcinoma needs to be emphasized. Training primary care doctors should focus on maintaining a high suspicion index for the early symptoms of laryngeal carcinoma. The socioeconomic effects of the disease and its treatment need to be considered. A comprehensive health insurance system for all Egyptians should be implemented
