Abstract

Studying and solving engineering problems associated with building on soft clay soil is essential for a successful design. Soft clay soil can be found in many parts of the world and especially in all delta locations in all around the world. It is also located in Egypt like central and northern part of Nile delta. Thus, the knowledge of the geotechnical characteristics and behavior of soft soils is required. Soft clay soil is located in many parts with a great depth under structures so soft clay soil causes problems like high inducing settlement or shear strength failure as soft clay has a low shear strength. To solve this problem, soft clay soil is mixed with a stabilizing additive to increase its shear strength and decrease its compressibility. In this study, cheap waste stabilizers are used to enhance the properties of soft clay. These cheap stabilizers are double edged weapon as they increase the characteristics of soft clay and also they have a negative impact on the environment In this research the effect of using two different waste cheap additives to stabilize the soft clay soil is investigated through an experimental study. Moreover, the effect of those stabilizers on some of the geotechnical characteristics of soft clay soil is studied. from different tests, the results showed that the optimum percentage for soft clay soil treated with seashell and eggshell powder were 12% and 6% respectively as these percentages have the highest shear strength and also decreased the voids ratio of soft clay but by further increasing the percentages of additives, the CBR was increasing.
