Abstract

Background: A stroke is a disease in which normal blood flow to a portion of the brain is interrupted, depriving it of nutrition and oxygen. Stopping the medicine for one minute can result in reversible symptoms like unconsciousness. One of the most difficult obstacles critical care nurses encounter is basic nursing training for neurological diseases. Aim of the study: Evaluate effect of an educational program on nurses’ performance regarding care of patients with cerebral stroke. Subjects and Method: Design: A quasi-experimental design was utilized to conduct the study. Setting: The research was carried out in the Port Said General Hospital’s intensive care unit. Nurses (50) samples. Tools of data collection: Two tools were used to collect data (Nurse Knowledge Questionnaire and Nurses Observation Checklist). Results: In terms of nurse performance in implementing stroke programs immediately after education (p-value = 0.001), the majority (92%) and (96%) of registered nurses had satisfactory levels of general knowledge and practice regarding care of patients with cerebral stroke. Conclusion: Nurses’ performance levels improved after implementing educational programs. Recommendations: Provide continuous training for nurses to keep their knowledge and practices in stroke patient care up to date.
