Abstract The Western Desert oil and gas exploration started during the middle of the previous century. The achievements and successes never ended. Day after day, year after year, the exploration activities did not stop. A long time ago, precisely between 1954 and 1958, the exploration activities in the Western Desert of Egypt started through Sahara Petroleum Company. The whole concession area was the subject of numerous reconnaissance geological and geophysical surveys. The area was examined using aerial photography and surface mapping also (Schlumberger 1995). The oil and gas exploration activities flourished again at the end of 1963 through Philips Petroleum Company. During the mentioned date, the company received rights to exploit the area north of latitude 30˚N. Amoco continued the exploration activities within the area south of latitude 30˚N and East of longitude 27˚E over the next ten years. Through the mentioned periods, the entire Western Desert was covered by aeromagnetic surveys. Alamein field is considered the first commercial oil discovery in the region. |
