Abstract The study area is located at 70Km south west of Alexandria city in Banger Elsokar, Egypt. The study aims to build up geographic digital database related to this area for evaluation the characteristics and prosperities of the soil. This plays a great role in choosing the best suitable kinds of crops to be grown on the study area through integration of the Geographic Information System (GPS) and the Evaluation program used (ALESArid) and also using the (GPS). ALES-Arid aimed to evaluate the fitness of different land types to produce different crops (field crops, vegetables, forage crops and fruit trees) to identify the optimum land use. A total of 46 (augers); which soil covers a total area of 7079.44 hectars. Soil samples were collected for laboratory determinations. Also, irrigation water samples were collected from EL-Nasr canal. This study consists of several main steps: 1- Data preparation Stage: which included inputting maps of the study area that were carried out using the satellite images to facilitate using it by the Arc-GIS program. 2-Field-work Stage: in this stage, the GPS was used to pinpoint the surface and sub surface samples and collecting it from the field-work in addition to collecting irrigation sample. 3- Laboratory Analysis Stage: which was directed to the analysis of the soil samples for chemical, physical and the so the irrigation water samples. 4- Data Analysis Stage: which was related to the analysis and manipulation and the results of the data to know the best way of using the soil. The main results of this research are as following: * DEM was obtained from the digital contour map, using the interpolation technique. The elevation of the study area ranged from 65m A.S.L.at the East part to 16m, A.S.L. at the north part. The analysis of digital elevation model indicated that the elevation of the study area decrease gradually towards the southern part of the study area. * According to grain size analysis, soil texture is generally coarse with very low percentage of clay and silt content. Sand percentage ranged between 45.52 and 84.80% median 71.90 in surface and 38.80 and 80.40% median 61.65 in sub surface. which means that the dominant class of soil texture is sandy loam to sandy clay loam. * Soil salinity varies in wide range among the studied soil samples ds/m, which means that the soil are non saline to high saline |
