Abstract Background: Approximately 40% to 50% of functional hypophysis adenomas are prolactinomas. The surgical techniques for pituitary surgery have been markedly improved over the last 20 years. Transsphenoidal surgery is accepted as the 2nd-line of treatment for dopamine agonists-intolerant or resistent patients. This study is performed in order to identify the averge time for normalization of PRL serum level following transsphenoidal prolactinoma surgery and relation to clinical outcomes. Methods: This is an observational prospective study of 20 patients of prolactinoma who were treated via an endonasal, endoscopic, trans-sphenoid approach at Kasr Alainy university Hospitals. All patients underwent PRL serum level measurement preoperatively, immediately post operative, day one after operation, the 6th day after operation, after 3 weeks and 6 weeks later. Results: The study included 20 patients, 11 males and 9 females, ages ranged from 20 to 60 years (mean age 36 years). Remission was achieved in 11 patients (55%) along time of study. The surgical complications in our series was CSF leakage in 2 patients, prolonged DI in 2 cases and one patient with severe post operative epistaxis |
