Abstract

Background: F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) has been widely used for staging, re-staging and for monitoring therapy-induced changes and response to therapy in patients with various types of cancer, but its utilization for gastric cancer has been limited. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of 18F-FDG PET/CT for detecting post operative recurrence in gastric cancer patients with radiologic or clinical suspicion of recurrence. We also evaluated the role of FDG-PET/CT in patients with metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma before palliative chemotherapy to predict chemotherapeutic response. Methods: In our prospective study, subjects included were 57 patients pathologically proven gastric adenocarcinoma, PET/CT was done to evaluate the staging of the disease. 20 patients were diagnosed as early gastric cancer (EGC), underwent operative intervention then follow up and assessment of possible recurrence by PET/CT. 35 patients were diagnosed as advanced gastric cancer (AGC) received chemotherapy then PET/CT was done for evaluation of chemotherapeutic response. The preliminary results have shown the great complementary role of PET/CT in accurate post operative recurrence detection and in chemotherapeutic response assessment
