Abstract

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is rare type of cancer that can exist in many different body sites. Although it most often occurs in salivary glands, it can also be found in many anatomic sites including paranasal sinuses, lacrimal gland, breast, skin, trachea and lung. Adenoid cystic carcinoma account for 1% of head and neck cancers and it is the second most common malignant salivary gland tumor (after mucoepidermoid carcinoma), it can occur in major and minor salivary glands but it is relatively more frequent in minor salivary glands of mucosae of upper alimentary and respiratory passages. Adenoid cystic carcinoma is characterized by propensity for perineural invasion or blood spread rather than lymphatic spread. Surgery whenever possible remains main line of therapy and preferably to be followed by radiotherapy. Since adenoid cystic carcinoma is rare, most studies are small series. This study included 57 patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of head and neck presented at National Cancer Institute, Cairo between the years 2011 and 2016. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the data of adenoid cystic carcinoma and to describe their main characteristics and treatment modalities
