Abstract

Introduction: Higher adiponectin concentration is associated with lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Serum levels of adiponectin are increased in patients with renal disease as well as in those with T1DM. Levels of this hormone seem to be particularly high in patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN). Increased serum adiponectin levels can predict progression from macroalbuminuria to end stage renal disease (ESRD) in patients with T1DM. Our study was aimed to investigate the relation between the serum adiponectin and MetS development in T1DM and to investigate the correlation between serum adiponectin level and DN assessed by microalbuminuria. Subjects and methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 50 children and adolescent with T1DM > 5years, with age range (10-16 years),they were divided into two groups according to albumincreatinine ratio (ACR), group I:ACR < 30 mg/g (n=25); group II:ACR 30-300 mg/g (n=25);group III: healthy control with no diabetes (n=30)
