Abstract

Equine lungs are commonly affected by many diseases of variable causes which are either due to infectious or non-infectious causes. A total of hundred donkey lungs were collected (2016-2017) from Giza zoo animal slaughterhouse. Postmortem, histopathological, histochemical and immunohistochemical examination of any pulmonary affections were performed. The equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV1) and myofibroblast were immunohistochemically stained in pneumonic and pulmonary fibrosis cases respectively. The incidence of emphysema was 72% whereas edema 25%, hemorrhage 27%, Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD) 78%, pneumonia 66%, parasitic affection 9% and pulmonary fibrosis (PF) 19%. EHV1 was positive in observed interstitial pneumonia and in association with cases of pulmonary fibrosis. Ü-SMA was positively expressed in myofibroblasts present in focal and diffuse PF emphasizing on the role of myofibroblasts in the pathogenesis of PF. This study showed a high incidence of the pulmonary affections in donkeys. EHV1 was diagnosed in interstitial pneumonia and in pulmonary fibrosis which suggests that EHV1 may have a role in PF. In horse cases, neonatal death with EHV1 infection was confirmed in foal aged 3days
