Abstract Background: Missed nursing care is universally used as an indicator of quality nursing care, however, little is known about mitigating effects of teamwork on these events. Aim: Was to evaluate the effect of nursing teamwork training program on missed nursing care in medical intensive care units. Design: A quasi experimental (one group pretest-posttest) design was utilized. Setting: Three medical intensive care units at a teaching hospital affiliated to Cairo University Hospital, Egypt. Subjects: A convenient sample of 48 nursing staff worked at the selected units. Tools: The Nursing Teamwork Observational Checklist and Missed Nursing Care Observational Checklist. Results: Total observed missed nursing care mean scores decreased immediately post-program implementation compared to preprogram and relatively gained small increase 3 months later ( = 2.28, SD = ± 0.19, mean %=28.00, = 2.10, SD = ± 0.10, mean %=10.42, = 2.16, SD = ± 0.14, mean %= 16.94 respectively) while the total observed nursing teamwork mean scores exhibited quite elevation post-program implementation and showed little decrease 3 months later ( = 2.52, SD = ± 0.27, mean % =51.98, = 2.72, SD = ± 0.20, mean %=72.45, = 2.67, SD = ± 0.11, mean %= 67.48 respectively). There was statistically significant negative correlation between nursing teamwork and missed nursing care dimensions (r= -0.31, p = 0.00) |
