Abstract Aim of the work: to investigate the perineural invasion (PNI) in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). In addition, to determine whether there is a relationship between the PNI and the primary tumour extension, cervical nodal metastasis and distant metastasis of laryngeal SCC. Material and methods: This study was conducted on 30 patients admitted at the otorhinolaryngology department, Kasr-Al Ainy hospital, Cairo University suffering from laryngeal SCC in the period from November 2016 till August 2018. Surgical resection was performed followed by histopathological examination of the specimen to detect the presence or absence of PNI, which was then correlated to the primary tumour extension, nodal and distant metastases. Results: 26.7% (8/30) of our patients were pathologically proved to be PNI +ve. There was a statistical significance between PNI and the cervical nodal metastasis (P value = 0.018); however, there was no statistical significance between the PNI and either the primary tumour extension or the distant metastasis |
