Abstract The aim of this study was to compare between injecting Botulinum toxin type A in the lateral pterygoid muscle combined with anterior repositioning splint versus injection alone Subjects and methods: A total number of six female patients (12 joints) were included in the study recruited from the outpatient clinic of Prosthodontic Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. , All included patients were diagnosed for anterior disc displacement with reduction. All included patients received a pre-operative Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and pain assessment using a VAS scale. Patients were randomly divided into two groups the first group of patients received Botox injection in the lateral pterygoid muscle, while the second group of patients received Botox injection in the lateral pterygoid muscle and received an anterior repositioning splint one week after Botox injection. All patients were followed up 2 weeks after Botox injection, and every month for a 4 month follow up period after Botox injection. Results: Concerning the MRI results A statistically significant difference was found between (group 1) and (group 2) where (p=0.027). The highest mean value of was found in (group 1) (1.33 ± 0.76) the lowest mean value was found in (group 2) (0.64 ± 0.23). In relation to mouth opening, range of lateral movements and VAS scale for the TMJ pain there was no statistically significant difference found between (group 1) and (group 2) |
