Abstract

Currently, four bariatric operations are commonly performed. The roux en Y gastric bypass (RYGB) was the first bariatric procedures developed and has been performed the greatest number of times (6). The sleeve gastrectomy is currently the most commonly performed bariatric procedure, both in the USA and worldwide (4). Adjustable gastric banding was approved in 2001 in the USA, but its use has steadily declined following the development of the sleeve gastrectomy (4). Lastly, biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS) is performed in only a small number of patients, and comprises less than 1% of bariatric operations in the USA. The majority of bariatric operations are now performed using minimally invasive surgical technique laparoscopy. The main advantages of the laparoscopic approach include rapid recovery, reduction of postoperative pain and reduction of wound-related complications compared with standard open surgery techniques (7).
