Abstract

ABSTRACT
Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common ulcerative inflammatory condition of the oral cavity. Its onset is usually in childhood and it affects about 25% of the general population.
It presents clinically as well-circumscribed lesions with central necrosis and fibrous, gray exudate surrounded by an erythematous halo on the non-keratinized oral mucosa. Underlying causes of aphthous ulcers include; trauma, stress, infections, allergy, genetic predisposition and nutritional causes.
No pharmacological treatment has been curative, although several modalities have been effective in decreasing pain and erythema and increasing the rate of re-epithelialization of the lesions. Systemic treatment is indicated for severe and recurring ulcerations when topical management is not sufficient.
Honey is a natural substance produced by honeybees. The healing effect of honey on recurrent aphthous stomatitis is ascribed to its anti-microbial, wound healing, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant,pre- and probiotic and immunomodulatory effects.
